Get Bent Galveston

Now that summer is here, let's talk a bit about sharks. One of our most misunderstood animals, sharks are valuable apex predators within our waters. Sharks have low reproduction rates, don't mature quickly and live long lives. It's up to us to protect the health of our oceans. Here are a few things to know (I'm using Blacktip numbers here):

1. Sharks pee through their skin, smell like cat pee and have high concentrations of mercury in their meat. There are much, much better eating fish in the sea.

2. Holding a shark by the gills is often deadly to
sharks so please don't do it. How would you like to have your lungs fisted and then get picked up by them. Not to mention that holding a shark in any way is potentially dangerous to yourself. Shark bites are serious if you are away from medical help and many guides and deckhands have learned this fact the hard way.

3. Female sharks have an average of 4-7 pups EVERY OTHER YEAR. Such low reproduction rates make shark populations especially susceptible to overfishing.

4. Blacktips don't reach sexual maturity until they teach about 4.5ft in length which takes about 7-8 years for females and 4-5 years for males.

5. It's best for sharks and ourselves if we just let them go. We are responsible for giving our kids and grandkids a great fishery let's not forget that we dont own the world it's just on loan to is from our children.
